Club History - Masters Swimming
Beacon Masters section began in 1986 with about 10 swimmers, all very keen. The masters soon travelled to many meets in the home countries including the Sussex Masters, Regional Masters and the National masters competitions. Some swimmers represented the County and swam at Inter-County competitions. The masters section even ventured overseas - the Guernset Open Masters competition which was over a weekend.
The masters section proved to be very successful with several swimmers going to Open Meets and winning medals as well as representing Sussex at Inter Counties. In 1991, former Club coach and President, Betty Rose (60-64 age group) broke the British 50 metres butterfly record at the Coventry Open Meet.
However, in the 1990s the Masters section came to an end only to return in the 2000s before again being disbanded but has recently been re-started in 2015 after a gap of a few years. The newly formed Masters section is open to any swimmers aged over 25 and the masters look forward to competing in Beacon colours at the 2016 Sussex Masters Counties and other masters events. We are continuing to see our numbers in the masters squad rising with very keen and enthusiastc participants.
